Green spaces in an urban landscape are not only a delight to behold, they offer countless benefits for people and the environment. A green, or living, roof covered with vegetation protects the roof construction from extreme temperatures and extends its effective lifespan. Green roofs have outstanding insulation properties and save energy and reduce sound transmission. They act as a habitat for flora and fauna and help boost the biodiversity in the city. Moreover, green roofs buffer water better so can help towards reducing fine particles in the air.
One form of green roof is the intensive system which is characterised by varied vegetation that can consist of grasses, shrubs, herbs and trees. An intensive green roof is comparable to a classic garden – but in this case on a rooftop.
An extensive green roof is mainly planted with sedums. These succulents have low management requirements and are capable of coping with fluctuating weather conditions (wind, heat, frost …). The diverse range of sedums means creating a colourful tapestry of plants on the green roof is easy.
Agaris has a wide range of green roof substrates that comply with the German FLL quality standard. These substrates are produced using high-quality, natural mineral raw materials and create the perfect foundation to install a durable and sustainable green roof.
Agaris has also developed substrates suitable for roof vegetable gardens. Various urban farming projects have been successfully developed in major Belgian cities such as Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent and cover the scope of social projects and innovative concepts in partnership with influential retail chains. Our way of contributing to the liveability and sustainability of the city.
